What does 22-Momme Mean?

If you’ve been browsing the gorgeous silk products in our shop, you’ll have seen the word ‘momme’ quite a lot, and a lot of other words you might not recognise. We’re not deliberately trying to confuse you; these words tell you exactly what you need to know about the quality of the silk. 

When you buy from us, we want you to know exactly what you’re getting and the benefits you can expect. 

So what does 22-momme mean?

Momme is a unit of measurement that is used to grade the weight and density of silk ( a bit like how thread count is used for cotton sheets). Basically, the higher the momme, the more strands of silk there are, and the heavier it is. A higher number also generally means higher quality and durability, though it does depend on what kind of item it’s used for. 

Momme is graded from 11-momme to 25-momme, and while 25-momme is of excellent quality, it would be much too heavy for clothing. 

I searched high and low for a company I could partner with to deliver luxurious silk products to customers so they could not only experience a little bit of luxury, but also get some amazing skin, hair, and health benefits. I needed to find silk that was high quality, durable, and the perfect weight and feel. Finally I settled on 22-momme silk for all of our amazing Silkology products, here’s why. 

Why 22-momme?

Google Silk pillowcases and you’ll find a lot of products out there, but buyer beware, the quality can vary drastically. When you’re investing in beautiful silk products, especially if you’re doing so to keep your skin and hair healthy, you want to know that you’re buying the best quality possible. 

If you’re browsing and the momme isn’t mentioned, I’d advise you to run a mile because this usually indicates a lower quality product. Spend your hard- earned cash on something you know is worth every penny. 

Why it’s worth investing in a 22-momme silk pillowcase

• It’s super soft and reduces friction against the hair and skin (no more bedhead or premature wrinkles (you’re welcome!)
• Silk is not as absorbent as cotton, so it’s a perfect choice for a pillowcase. Cotton, while amazing as a bath towel, sucks away moisture from the hair and skin which you definitely don’t want if you want them to stay healthy and hydrated. A 22-momme silk pillowcase is softer and more hair and skin-friendly than a lower momme silk or cotton pillowcase. 
• The higher the momme, the more durable the silk is, so it will stay looking and feeling amazing for longer.
